"The Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension is a six-mile extension of the Metro Gold Line, connecting the Eastside directly to Union Station with direct access to the existing Gold Line to Pasadena, which ends at Sierra Madre. The Eastside Extension consists of eight new stations, with two below grade stations at Soto Street and Mariachi Plaza. Construction of this $898 million dollar project began in 2004 and ended with a spectacular grand-opening with the famous Mariachi Festival and Boyle Heights Neighborhood Block Party November 15, 2009; which was attended by over 20,000 people from all over Southern California and the World. The Gold Line Extension is a Light-Rail system, electrically powered overhead.

This project was designed by The Eastside LRT Partners with Frank X. Villalobos, FAIA President of Barrio Planners Incorporated as Lead Architect. Along with a variety of other responsibilities Barrio Planners Incorporated was also responsible for the design and architecture of three of the eight new Gold Line Stations: Pico/Aliso Station by Mr. Korajack Srivongse, AIA; Mariachi Plaza Station by Mr. Guillermo Villalobos, AIA; and East L.A. Civic Center Station designed by Mr. Frank Villalobos, FAIA. Among the ancillary infrastructure of the system, designed by the Eastside LRT Partners; consisting of the firms of Parsons Brinkerhoff, JGM, and Barrio Planners Incorporated, is the new S-Crossover Bridge over CA I-101.

This new bridge is becoming a go-to place in Los Angeles because of the view-shed of downtown with its spectacular orientation to the Santa Viviana Cathedral, the Newly constructed high school, the Civic Center, and the historic El Pueblo de Nuestra Seņora la Reina de los Angeles. Also included the historic extension is the restoration, and preservation of the 1st Street Bridge over the Los Angeles River; with the Light Rail guide way in the center of its span.

This capital investment has given the city of Los Angeles an instant icon, because of the sensitive approach given to the Architecture of each station, which respectively relate to the vernacular of the communities in which they transverse.
